More Priceless Than Gold

Persevering can be difficult when going through something hard. Especially if it involves pain. Any athlete will tell you that. Olympic athletes train for years to be at the best of their abilities and yet it’s still hard when you are tested on the world stage. But perseverance will get you to the end. Perseverance will push you farther. And if you train hard enough. It can lead to gold. To be the best in the world. In truth, when there is a clear goal in mind, perseverance seems to have a point through the trials and the testing. But what if there isn’t a clear path or direction? What if the testing seems endless and you feel that you have lost course?

Young Solomon felt the pain when he was anointed king over Israel. He was following in the footsteps of his father, David. The King David. Solomon didn’t have a clue how to stand the tests and trials of being king. So he turned to the one source for his people. And it's the same for us. Solomon prays to God and says:

Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours (1 Kings 3:7-9 NIV)?

Solomon recognized that he can’t do the job alone. He needs help from the one true God. The creator himself. He doesn’t ask for power or authority. He asks for wisdom. Discernment through the testing. And God’s response to Solomon is beautiful. He was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings (1 Kings 3:10-13 NIV).

God not only says yes to wisdom, but I'll also give you more than you could have imagined. Seeking God for wisdom and understanding brought Solomon more than he could have ever thought possible. God is more than willing to hand out wisdom so that we can persevere through the storms and the trials. To give us the wisdom of direction and purpose. The reality is, who am I to deny what the Lord can do? It's easy for You. And now I see all that I have. I've got my confidence back. I put my trust in the One who still does miracles (Elevation Worship, More Than Able).

The joy of our trials is found in the One who is more than able. He hears our earnest prayer for wisdom. It's wisdom that will give us sight beyond the testing. It will give us the strength to persevere toward the goal of a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Something more priceless than gold.
