The Hardest Thing

Taking the next step… Or even a first step in a different direction can be difficult. Often, if you don’t have a plan when you set out, you will never get to where you want to be…
Yogi Berra was probably one of the most distinguished baseball players in the history of the game. He once said: If you don’t set goals, you’ll never reach them. Or like they say in golf, if you aim for nothing, you’ll hit it every time. Take any player in the major leagues: I’d say just about every one of them had a dream – a goal – to be a big-leaguer when they were kids. It wasn’t an easy goal, but it was a reachable one, and that’s important.
If we are going to have deeper spiritual disciplines within our lives, we need a goal… Something that is reachable… Something that we can train for… Paul said it best when he was speaking to the church in Corinth. He wrote:
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever (1 Corinthians 9:25).
Paul writes of athletes training for a series of games that would happen in between the Olympic years. They would train with a very specific goal in mind… To receive a crown of Laurels as the champion of the game… We, as Christians are called to act the same as any Olympic athlete… The only difference is our goal is a deeper understanding of who Jesus is… a crown that is everlasting.
The training is still very hard… The hardest thing is to get started (Yogi Berra).
So why not start today… Make the choice today to dive deeper into a healthy rhythm of spiritual disciplines… Make a plan… a goal that is reachable… Ask someone to walk with you on the journey to reach your goal… Bring someone along with you to share in your successes as well as when you need help the most… So that you can finish strong…
Do the hardest thing today and take that first step…
