Who is Like Him?
When it comes to the worship of God, what’s the first thing you think of? Is it that He’s all knowing, powerful, or even His sovereignty over the world? Maybe there’s another attribute about God or some characteristic that grabs your attention. Is it that God is all-knowing, ever present, or His great comfort? The trouble with focusing on just one or two attributes of God is that it’s a very limiting view of the reason behind our worship. What is the relationship between God and humanity that draws us to worship Him? Yes, there are so many attributes of God’s character that draws us in, but ultimately what compels us to lay before Him in worship, or to live a life of worship is the basic reality that God is holy. Of all the attributes of God, holiness is the one that most uniquely describes Him and in reality is a summation of all His other attributes. The word holiness refers to His separateness, His otherness, the fact that He is unlike any other being. It indicates His complete and infinite perfection. Holiness is the attribute of God that binds all the others together (John Macarthur, God’s Holiness and Your Worship). When we properly understand this point, the very worship that we give to God will be revolutionized.
When the people of Israel encountered the holiness of God, their worship was changed. They looked to God in all his splendor and declared, “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders (Exodus 15:11 ESV)? When we understand God’s holiness, the answer is that there is no being that is equal to God. The reality is that holiness is so exclusively spoken of as an attribute of God that the psalmist declared that holy and awesome is His name (Psalm 111:9b NIV).
That doesn’t merely mean that the name of God is sacred and sanctified; it means holiness is so much the essence of God’s character that Holy is one of the names God goes by (John Macarthur, God’s Holiness and Your Worship).
Holiness is His very essence. That’s who we worship. And our lives should reflect the worship of His name. To come before Him each day in awe and with reverence. He’s unlike any other being. And it’s His holiness that draws us in. Come before His infinite perfection today and allow it to change the way we live. To change our worship. And to live in a way that reflects His holiness.
