Patterns

We all have patterns in our lives. What we do when we first wake up. Routes we take to work. Some patterns are good and others not so much. Some are new patterns that we created based on the rhythm of our week and other patterns have traveled through generations of our families.

Before we know it, the pattern of our lives, or the patterns of our families, have affected how we live out each day. The sum total of our history has brought us to this point. And where we need to be careful is that the choices we make today will have an impact on the generations to come. Some we will see and some we won’t. But the patterns we establish in our lives will eventually affect those who come after us.

So what is the pattern of your life? Searching for fame, or money? Pushing through the pain of the past? Trying to make it through today? The truth for us today and every day is that even if I searched the world… It couldn't fill me. Man's empty praise and treasures that fade are never enough. The things of this world and the patterns of the past aren’t enough to fill us. They only perpetuate the brokenness of the world… But there is one who came along and put me back together. And every desire is now satisfied here in Your love (Elevation Worship, Graves into Gardens).

Jesus is the very reason we don’t have to fall into the patterns of our past. He is the reason we aren’t bound to live out the same mistakes day in and day out. The decisions we make today can lead us toward a new pathway. As Paul wrote to the Ephesian church:

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV).

Put on the new self today because the decisions and the actions we make today have the ability to effect change for generations. If you feel stuck in a rut, try something new. Unsure how to change the rhythm you have now? Ask someone you trust to help. Don’t try to do this all alone. But don’t just wait and see what may happen. Take action. Because the decisions of today matter for tomorrow.

So… What pattern needs a new direction today?
