Friction
Have you ever felt the pressure of trying to just keep up with the world around you? Fashion trends, music genres, and work-life balance all seem to be changing year after year. It seems the motto has become, “keep up or you will be left behind and left out.” It can cause a number of bumps and bruises along the way and we journey through life when we decide to go against the grain of cultural trends. The reality, however, is that you can’t go against the grain of the universe and not expect to get splinters (C.S. Lewis).
Splinters can be painful. And the longer they sit, the more painful it becomes. There begins an overwhelming pressure to just go with it… If anyone understood what this felt like, it was a man named Daniel. In a time where his people were exiled to a foreign land, he stood in the face of overwhelming opposition to worship Yahweh alone. He stood out in the crowd and it caused friction with others in the kingdom. They sought to remove him and convinced the king to throw anyone worshiping God to be thrown into a den filled with lions. Daniel would not stop worshiping Yahweh and so he was thrown into the den. Those against him believe this would be the end of Daniel… Then morning came… The king had the den opened and there was Daniel who yelled up “May the king live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty (Daniel 6:21-22).
His God was with him… He is the same God we turn to today… He’s still in the lion’s den with us… When we feel the friction of going against the grain of the modern age, can we be at peace to say Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine. He's been my fourth man in the fire, time after time. Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood and what He did for me on Calvary is more than enough. I trust in God, my Savior. The one who will never fail. He will never fail (Elevation, I Trust in God).
What are the pressures you feel today… Or this week? What’s pushing you to just fall in line with everyone else?
Where is your trust this week?
