In the Days of Auld Lang Syne

By Eddie Keith

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne! For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
This familiar poem was written by the Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788. It is familiar to many around the coming of the New Year. Roughly translated, it can mean many things such as time goes by… old long ago… old long since… long long ago…days gone by… times long past… or old times.
The first line begins by asking a rhetorical question. Very simply to ask if it is right that old times be forgotten? The answer lies in the rest of the poem as a call to remember a long-standing friendship, event, or situation.
This new year can cause us to feel the same. Remember the nostalgia of Christmas. The true reason we celebrate and a feeling to carry all the year. Should old memories be forgotten? Or should they help us to shape how we become the church on purpose. As we keep the feeling of Christmas in our hearts to keep that feeling all year long helping us to build the framework of our blueprint….
The Apostle Paul would remind all he encountered to remember who they were prior to coming to faith so that they would remember who God truly was. On one such occasion in Athens, on his second missionary journey, along with Silas and Timothy, Paul speaks these words to the Athenians:
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being". Acts 17:24-28
God is still God… Still the maker of the world and everything in it, who has called us to seek Him. Whether you came to the faith 5 years or 50 years ago, he still calls us to draw into the fellowship of believers. To seek Him and His direction for our lives.
So let’s start the new year off building a framework that draws closer to Jesus Christ… That draws closer to the fellowship. Spend some dedicated time each day getting to know the Father through his word… Spend time in conversation with Him through prayer… and grow with people who you can lean on in the faith… Spur one another on in love this year
