Deeper Roots

As we walk through this life, we’re all searching for the thing that will fill us up. The thing that nourishes our soul. The world offers so many wonderful options. Jobs, money, possessions. Even our families. But is that enough? I mean, look at trees. They’re on the same journey to find the thing that will give them nourishment. According to a Rutger’s University study, the Shepherd’s tree’s roots can reach up to 230 feet deep. Why so deep? Most trees only have root systems 3 feet deep. It’s because the Shepherd’s tree is located in the desert. The root system goes down deep to find the water it needs to stay alive. Our souls are on the same journey to find the water of life. If we aren’t careful though, we can remain in the shallows of the temporary things and miss the call for more.

Paul wrote to the church in Colasse that just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ (Colossians 2:6-8 NIV). The things of this world want to keep us in the shallows, but we were called to something deeper. To let our roots go deep into the soil to search for our nourishment. We were made for more in this life and our guidepost. Our direction will be revealed through the incomparable love of God as we go deeper to understand His movement in our lives. No matter where you might be on your journey today, you can go deeper. His love is calling each of us to dive deeper and grow closer to Him. But maybe there’s something stopping you today. Something in your past where you feel you no longer deserve the immeasurable love of God. Can I say today, that this can’t be further from the truth.

Because I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below - indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39 NLT).

The love of God for you is so great that no matter where you might be, He’s there with you. There’s nothing in this world that could separate you from His love. So take a step today. Root yourself in His love. Be built up as a child of the living God who wants to do exceedingly more in your life than you could ever imagine.
