Keeping Christmas

Do you ever just feel tired from the holiday season? Almost like you need a vacation from the time off? In the modern age, we have created a very hectic season. It can be exhausting and can make us feel like we just want it all to be over so we can return to our normal operating schedule. The prophet Isaiah wrote that Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall (Isaiah 40:30). We run ourselves ragged with the commercialized version of Christmas. As a result, we come to the new year on fumes and, by extension, can miss the meaning of what we are supposed to do with the Christmas season.

The message of Christmas is not one that only lasts the month of December. It’s more than trees and lights and eggnog. The message and the hope of Christmas is meant to be carried throughout the year. Even if we are feeling tired and out of energy. The Good news for us today is that The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak (Isaiah 40:28-29).

We don’t have to go about sharing Christmas into the new year alone. The everlasting God is available to us. Isaiah goes on to say that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31). Keeping Christmas can be a joy. It’s the hope in the Lord that will renew our strength so that we can continue to spread the good news of Jesus Christ into the year to come.

When Ebeneezer Scrooge woke to see that he didn’t miss Christmas, he was overjoyed at the chance to change his ways. To live the joy of the season all the year. The end of his tale was really a new beginning. It was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! (Charles Dickens)

A new year has begun. How will you keep Christmas well?

May God bless Us, Every One! (Charles Dickens)
