What's Your Legacy?

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children… (Proverbs 13:22a)
Have you thought about what we will leave behind? What do we work so hard for in this life? Deep down, I think we all want to leave the world in a better place than when we arrived. At times those tasks seem insurmountable… monumental at times.
When I began running back in 2016, it seemed impossible. Running for 30 minutes seemed like it would never happen… But then there was something to work toward… The medal at the end of a race… The sense of achievement and completing a task that seemed like it could never be. Paul understood this mentality. When he wrote to the church in Corinth, he spoke to what they understood. Every two years, Corinth would hold the Isthmian games. Athlete against athlete. Each working toward a gift for the winner. Paul equates that to Christian living in chapter 9:
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)
As Christians, we run a race with eternity in mind. We press on to be messengers of the Father. That is the legacy we will leave this world. ICF Worship wrote a song called Legacy that reads:
We step up to the plate. We choose obedience. Make room for Your great plans. We know the cost is high, but we will pay the price. No matter what may come, we're here to glorify. To see Your kingdom come, to see Your will be done… Let me live my life, to leave a legacy. A story of Your grace and what You've done in me!... When they look at me, I want them to see that my heart looks like Your heart in the end!
One day our race will finish… The battle fought… And at the end of our days, how do we want to be remembered? A heart that looks like the father… or a life that I lived for me?
What will your legacy be?
