I See Grace
Do you remember that one time in life you really missed the mark? That time you looked back and felt you couldn’t come back from it? Micah Tyler wrote a song that speaks to the heart of the feeling. He writes. I've seen shame. The kind that comes from mistakes. The kind that won't go away. When I turned around. They were right there to remind me. I've seen regret. The kind that messes with your head. The failures and the can't forgets.
Within the gospel according to Luke, he records two parables that Jesus shares that echo these sentiments. A young man felt he could better on his own, so he arrogantly asks his father for all of his inheritance upfront. He set out into the world and squandered everything away… until he was left with nothing… Living by scraps. When he finally realized what has happened to him, he says to himself:
‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants’ (Luke 15:17-19).
Our past can leave us believing that we are no longer worth it… The years carry on and we still hurt. Fall short of what You say I'm worth and that devil says I don't deserve what You did on the cross (Micah Tyler).
The voices we hear tell us we don’t deserve what Jesus did for us so many years ago… The truth is… We don’t… Not one person deserves that kind of love… But because of the grace of Jesus Christ to come and save the world… He did it anyway… The result for us today is we can see grace. Hallelujah, [we] stand amazed. [we’re] staring at an empty grave and the stone that You rolled away. When [we were] a prodigal, you saw a son. When [we] left the 99, you saw the one. And just like that, all [our] past has been erased. When [we] look back, [we] see grace.
The grace of God goes with us always… He is calling us back to his arms… Luke also writes that “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? (Luke 15:4).
His grace is sufficient for us today… Through the hurt and shame and the things we can’t seem to get away from… His grace is enough today so that when we look back on the course of our lives… We will see the movement of his grace…
