Blessed to Bless

Have you ever been standing in line waiting to pay for your favorite morning wake up cup and when you finally get to the register you are told “you’re covered, someone paid it forward for you.” You have just received a blessing to start your day. It changes your outlook on the whole morning and perhaps you turn around and pay for the next person… Or wait and bless someone else throughout the day. In a nutshell, that is the Christian life.

Blessed to bless. And that idea goes all the way back to Abraham. God comes to Abraham in Genesis 12 and changes the course of his life. God says to Abraham: I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you… and you will be a blessing (Genesis 12:2 NIV). And this is the pattern for our lives. As Richard DeHaan has written, He was blessed to bless! What he received was not for his own selfish enjoyment, but for the welfare and betterment of others (Richard DeHaan, Our Daily Bread Ministries).

The life Abraham would lead after his encounter with Yahweh would be one of blessing. To give out of the abundance that he has been given. And it shows us how to go forward in our own lives. We, as believers in the living God, have been blessed. Regardless of the circumstances we may find ourselves in currently. And the call on our lives today, as it was with Abraham, is to share that blessing with the world around us. Maybe that means volunteering some time you have available. Maybe that's financial help to someone you know, the church, or a local charity. Maybe it’s being the shoulder and ears to someone who needs you right now.

The truth is, we all have been given unique gifts. And we are called to use them. Peter writes it this way: God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another (1 Peter 4:10 NLT).

It’s a new day. Use your gifts today to flip the blessing around. We are blessed to bless. Be one today!
