Sustenance
What sustains you from when you wake up to when you lie down? Food? Coffee? Sustenance is something we don’t often think about until we are deprived of it. When we rummage the pantry for that snack because we are starving and dinner is too far away… Or you are on your fourth coffee break because your day is just dragging on…
Too often we try to manage life on our own, only stopping for nourishment when it becomes absolutely necessary… When we are actually running on empty. The same principle holds true for our spirits. Are we seeking the God who sustains us so that we stay full… Or are we only seeking his sustenance when it is absolutely necessary?
The 16th president of the United States faced a similar situation. However, when Abraham Lincoln was faced with all the duties and responsibilities of the presidency, he knew that it was a job too big for anyone… He would be recorded as saying: “I should be the most presumptuous blockhead upon this footstool if I for one day thought that I should discharge my duties which have come upon me without the aid and enlightenment of One who is stronger and wiser than all others” (Abraham Lincoln’s Daily Treasure).
Lincoln knew that he needed the help from God to be able to have the wisdom and courage to lead the country in a time when the Civil War threatened to tear it apart. Likewise, the prophet Isaiah relayed a message from God to the Israelites who were captive to the Babylonian empire. Isaiah speaks these words:
“Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you (Isaiah 46:3-4).
Maybe you feel depleted today… Maybe you are just running on fumes… Trying to carry on each day just to get to the end. Find encouragement and peace in the one that gives us aid and enlightenment… To the one who sustains us… even to our old age… Call out to him today to fill your cup and to fill it abundantly with His grace.
