Our Service in the Kingdom
By Eddie Keith
We are not all called to greatness. Some are called to the spotlight… Others are to lead from behind the scenes… and some are called to join the ranks…
Within the body of ministry, every person has a part to play and a calling to minister. Such was the case for the Ranger, Strider, from the Lord of the Rings. His lineage required of him to be a king, but his calling was to serve and protect those from harm.
“Even after Strider is finally revealed (to the astonishment of the Hobbits) as the one true king, nothing changes in his demeanor or ambitions. Aragorn still leads in order to serve, as will be mission until the end of his days” (Sarah Arthur, Walking with Frodo).
We each have a similar mission called on our lives. Maybe not to lead, but we are called to love and serve others through the ministry of the Church. As Paul was explaining to the Ephesian church:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV
Our faith and salvation is a gift from God and we are his handiwork. Another translation calls humanity God’s workmanship. In other words, we are his masterpiece. Created to be his ministers in this world… In this community… and in this church… We are called to actively participate in the place we worship… so that the ministry can reach farther than we could imagine… Jesus will grow his church… we are called to serve in it. This was Jesus’ point in Mark 10 where he tells his disciples:
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many". Mark 10:45 NIV
Jesus Christ came down from heaven to serve humanity where it was. We are called to nothing less. To give of the precious resource of our time to ministers to the community around us.
Aragorn went on to be the great King of Gondor… He answered the call to leadership, but his rule was to serve the people. We too are called to serve and be in service to our King and Savior Jesus Christ.
Will you answer the call?
