Another in the Fire

There are times we seem to be walking this road alone… Unseen… Unheard… Even forgotten. The things we feel or are going through seem not to matter to the world around us… And there are times that our world seems to be crashing down around us… set ablaze as everything is collapsing… Many of us can point to a time we felt this way… Is it today? Has it been this year? Or the last few?
Ancient Israel felt a similar hurt and pain as they were exiled to Babylon. Hundreds of years under the captivity of another nation. Away from their homes that were ransacked and destroyed. Forgotten… and alone… But within the book of Daniel, we come across three men who refuse to lose hope in who God is… Ordered to bow before a golden statue of King Nebuchadnezzar, they refused and were threatened to be thrown into a blazing furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up (Daniel 3:16-18).
In the bleakest of days, with no hope for the future, they refuse to lose hope in Yahweh. The result… They are thrown into the fire… Cast off… The world they know, now just a fire all around them… But the truth for us today and for them is that the Glory of God can be revealed in our lives even at the lowest moments. When things seem to be falling apart… God can make it shine and we are never alone. The truth is there’s a grace when the heart is under fire. Another way when the walls are closing in (Hillsong United).
For Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego… Their faith in Yahweh gave way to His glory being revealed… Sure they were tossed in a blazing furnace… but when they were, the King leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:24-25).
We can have the same truth today… When the world seems to be falling around us, There [is] another in the fire, standing next to me. There [is] another in the waters, holding back the seas. And should I ever need reminding of how I've been set free. There is a cross that bears the burden, where another died for me.
There is no other name, but the name that is Jesus. He who was and still is and will be through it all
