In God We Trust
We put our trust in so many things throughout our days. Trust that our cars will get us from point A to point B. That our electronics will hold up to our schedules and demands of the job. We trust that our house will still be there when we are done after a long day and that there will still be work to do tomorrow. But when it comes to trusting that God is in control of my tomorrow, it’s a little harder for us. We worry if it will be enough. What if I don’t hear Him or if I will get it all wrong? Will I make enough now so that I can retire early? And the more we head down that path, the more fear and anxiety begin to take over in our minds. It can almost feel as if our throat is closing up and it’s hard to breathe.
Early Americans understand that anxiety as they faced the British a second time in the War of 1812. After a night of being bombarded by cannon fire, a young soldier looked out of Fort McHenry and saw the flag of the United States still flying high. It inspired him to write a poem that would lead to a national anthem where the fourth stanza reads and this be our motto-"In God is our trust” (Francis Scott Key, The Defence of Fort M’Henry- 1814).
Nearly 142 years later, that phrase became the official motto of the United States. Francis Scott Key understood what Scripture has been trying to say throughout history. That we serve a God that we can trust to see us through. The prophet Jeremiah spoke this message to the people of Judah so that they might understand the reliance we have in God. Jeremiah writes blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit (Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT).
We serve a God in whom we can trust and put our confidence. He is the stream that never goes dry and He’s already looking out for tomorrow. We can put our trust in God that he will never fail us or leave us. It’s a perfect submission, where all is at rest. It’s a trust to know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps (Elevation Worship, Trust in God).
He’s with you today. Working out His good will for those who follow Him. Trust Him today! He will never fail.
