The True Measure

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges (Martin Luther King Jr.). It’s in the moments of testing and trial that the person we are at or core is revealed. It’s because those times of struggle or hardship leave us little room for pretense or façades. Many of us struggle day in and day out over some test of endurance or patience or controversy. We feel stuck in between our past baggage and the yet to come we hope for. Stuck in the middle of life dealing with one thing or another. What attitude or attribute sits at your core that is waiting to coming out in those times of testing?

The reality for us as human beings is that if we are not feeding our souls with the right nutrients that come from God, we may not like what comes out. When Jesus spoke to the crowd on the side of the mountain, he spoke of the product of such an event saying that By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 7:16-21).

How and what we are rooted in matters. How we grow matters. Yes you may feel stuck… You can't go back to the beginning. Can't control what tomorrow will bring… There is good news for us today, because I know here in the middle is the place where You promise to be. I'm not enough unless You come. Will You meet me here again? 'Cause all I want is all You are. Will You meet me here again (Elevation Worship, Here Again)?

God promises to meet you where you are… To not leave you alone… To help you grow so that the fruit you bear is good. The truth is if we are rooted and established in the gospel, then our true measure will reveal the heart of God when we stand in the controversy and challenges of our day.

What is the fruit you are bearing today?
