Discipleship pathway

What is the Olivet Church Discipleship Pathway?

We were made to move. The Christian life is a journey, and we need a “road map” to help us along the way. To that end, Olivet Church has been developing a discipleship pathway to help people follow Jesus Christ more closely. A discipleship pathway is a sequenced plan to move disciples from one stage of growth to the next. It is broad enough to include everyone, but specific enough to meet each spiritual generation where they are.

To fulfill the vision that God has given us, we need a pathway to progress. Olivet can develop many programs, events, and activities; however, we must have a clear vision and structure for how we are growing towards maturity and fruitfulness. Olivet Church has developed a discipleship pathway to help people follow Jesus Christ more closely.

Some components of the Discipleship Pathway curriculum include:
-Learning about sacred pathways to God and your personal sacred pathway to connect with Him
-Understanding spiritual gifts and identifying your spiritual gifts
-Learning, understanding, and growing in the spiritual disciplines
-Learning how to lead a small group or ministry team
-Understanding and growing in the mission of making disciples
-Understanding the meaning of calling and applying it to your life

Christianity & Olivet Church

God created each of us with a specific personality and spiritual temperament. Knowing your spiritual temperament can help you understand how best to relate to God. A sacred pathway describes the way we relate to God, how we draw near to Him. Most of us have two or three ways that are most natural for us. These form our spiritual temperament. There are nine sacred pathways.

Spiritual Gifts

Everyone is on a unique spiritual journey with God. God never changes, but how He expresses Himself through His individual followers can differ. This reflects the fact that God has a plan for each person’s life that plays a specific part in His master plan of making Himself known to the world. The spiritual gifts God gives people are part of His perfect plan for their lives. He gives each of His followers the same Spirit, because it’s His Spirit. He knows each person perfectly, so He knows which gifts are part of His plan to work in the world through them. Not all of His followers receive the same spiritual gifts. All the spiritual gifts the Bible describes are significant, and they work best when used in the context of life within a community of other Christians.

Spiritual gifts are different from talents. Talents are specific abilities, like skill at the piano or in a sport. Talents can be practiced and developed through hard work. People who do not have the Holy Spirit within them still have many talents, however they cannot access the enabling power of the Holy Spirit in exercising those talents.

If you are a follower of Jesus, as you continue growing spiritually, your gifts may become clearer. Over time, God uses circumstances to help you better understand your gifts and use them as part of His plan.

Spiritual Disciplines

Spiritual Disciplines are practices found in Scripture that promote spiritual growth among believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Spiritual disciplines are habits of devotion and experiential Christianity that have been practiced by the people of God since biblical times. The Bible explains personal (practiced alone) and interpersonal (practiced with others) spiritual disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are activities not attitudes. Spiritual disciplines help us know and experience God and to grow us in Christlikeness.
