Sync Up

Have you ever felt out of sync? Like when the morning comes, you’re just not ready for the day. Where you feel sluggish or just not your normal self. Something feels out of place. This can be a common occurrence when we start feeling sick. Or when the weather starts to change and it’s too dark in the morning to get going. Or maybe your schedule is so busy that you’re finding it difficult to keep up with everything. Many times this can go on for weeks or even years. Feeling like something isn’t right. And until we figure out what that thing is, our mind and body will have a hard time syncing up. It would feel like our body is walking out of step with our mind or emotions.

The interesting thing is that, according to Scripture, the same thing can happen when our faith doesn’t line up with the actions of our lives. Many times throughout Scripture, Paul and other writers have addressed the need for our actions and faith to sync up. In Paul’s second letter to his young disciple, Timothy, he wrote that Timothy must be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others (2 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV). Paul was calling Timothy to go out and share the message of the gospel to others. For him to be an example of the faith and to put it into action by teaching other believers to become disciples, leaders and teachers.

Think of this as the ‘syncing’ of how we believe internally and speak and act externally. They both have spiritual grooves, and they need to fit together properly in order to function as God intended… I believe we see Paul showing Timothy what it looks like to commit fully to Jesus so that we can ‘sync’ our lives and experience the living and reigning God offers to His children. “Be strong in the grace” he says, and follows it up with what that looks like (Be Strong in the Grace). As disciples who follow the way of Jesus, we’re called to have a faith and life that are in sync with one another. It’s a faith that is constantly growing and then showing it through our actions with others and those around us. It’s a persistent commitment of our lives that endures until the end. It’s the True North to which we always return, the gravity that consistently grounds us (Be Strong in the Grace). Be strong in the grace that you’ve been given today. Sync up your faith and actions throughout the week.
