The Only Way
Living the life of a disciple can be difficult. It instills some fear in us at times. That we could be called all over the world… Away from our homes and the people we love. And so we coast through life without discipling ourselves. But what if that wasn’t the case at all?
What if we have been called to follow the way of Jesus and be the light exactly where we are today? That the deeper we grow in our relationship with him will only give us the tools to shine his light… Oswald Chambers once wrote: It is ingrained in us that we have to do exceptional things for God - but we do not. We have to be exceptional in the ordinary things of life, and holy on the ordinary streets
among ordinary people - and this is not learned in five minutes (My Utmost for His Highest).
It is a change in our mindset… We are not the ones who do the exceptional and extraordinary things of this world… We are called to grow as servants and vessels for the Light of the World to work… Peter became a changed man after the resurrection of Jesus… And after healing a paralyzed man, he was brought before the religious leaders of the day who asked in whose name he does such amazing things… The account goes this way: Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:8-12).
Peter witnessed Jesus on earth… He knew there was no other way to be saved from the sin of this world… There was no other name by which this healing could be done… And it was done right where he was… Not in some far distant land… That is not what Peter was called to… He was called to show people that there was no other way to salvation… As the artists The Housefires puts it:
May I be like Mary, open to the movements of Your heart. Blessed in the keeping of Your promise. A faithful friend of God (If I Could Have Anything, 2023).
We are called to the same task. To be available to the movement of the Spirit… And to allow Him to do the extraordinary through us… Right where we are… Today. Share the Light of the World today. He is the Only Way!
