The Part We Play
Abraham Lincoln once said we proposed to give all a chance. And we expect the weak to grow stronger, the ignorant wiser; and all better and happier together. For Lincoln, growth was not restricted to the individual… It was a community activity… Growing together under a united cause called democracy… But it’s a hard process… Being of one mind.
We all have differing thoughts and opinions. Reasons for getting up in the morning and particular ways that we like things… But as people of God, we are called to a higher purpose… Too often we forget that in favor of our own desires… We forget that we are in this together… Hillsong writes it this way in their song Good Grace:
People. Come together. Strange as neighbors, our blood is one… Children of generations; of every nation; of kingdom come… Don't let your heart be troubled. Hold your head up high. Don't fear no evil. Fix your eyes on this one truth. God is madly in love with you. Take courage. Hold on. Be strong. Remember where our help comes from (Good Grace, Hillsong).
Differing opinions are ok… Different preferences are ok… But a different mindset is where we go wrong… We, as a people of God, need to be of one mind… With the help of the one who has poured out his love for us… Paul understood this like no other… When writing to the Romans he urged them to live out true community with one another. Inside of chapter 12 he writes:
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited (Romans 12:9-16).
We are called to be in harmony with one another in a way that our actions and our words make beautiful music… Growth is a community activity and we all need to participate… We all have a part to play…
