I 've Got Plenty to be Thankful For

By Eddie Keith
I have always loved old films. There was a golden age of the film industry where there was truly movie magic. One of the stars to come out of that era was Bing Crosby. In 1942, Bing starred alongside Fred Astaire in a delightful holiday movie called Holiday Inn. Bing’s character, Jim Hardy, opens an inn that is only open on holidays and is a showcase of songs that Jim has written. Around November, Jim writes this song:
I've got plenty to be thankful for. I haven't got a great big yacht to sail from shore to shore. Still I've got plenty to be thankful for. I've got plenty to be thankful for. No private car, no caviar, no carpet on my floor. Still I've got plenty to be thankful for. I've got eyes to see with, ears to hear with, arms to hug with, lips to kiss with, someone to adore. How could anybody ask for more?
My needs are small, I buy 'em all at the five and ten cent store. Oh, I've got plenty to be thankful for. I've got eyes to see with, ears to hear with, arms to hug with, lips to kiss with, someone to adore. How could anybody ask for more?
My needs are small, I buy 'em all at the five and ten cent store. Oh, I've got plenty to be thankful for.

It is fitting for this day and age. We often forget how truly blessed we are. As culture continues to tell us to want more or need more, we need a time to reflect on and be thankful for the things God has put into our care. The things that we are meant to steward in this world. It is what Scripture calls us to do, is it not? Paul writes these words as he begins to close his letter to the Church at Colossae:
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:15-17
We are called to care, and be thankful, for the things that God has put into our possession for the time we are on this earth… So whatever we do with those things, let us do them in the name of the Lord Jesus and remember that we’ve got plenty to be thankful for this year…
