Hills and Valleys
The ups and downs of life can be a lot to take in at times. Some days we breeze through. But it's the moments we don’t that can be the hardest. It is so easy to find the joy and the movement of God when we sit on the hilltop. Looking down on all the good things we have been blessed with.
But when we are in the valley… Often we feel like we are sinking further and deeper into it the more we sit… However, there is good news for us. The same God that is there blessing us on the hilltop is the same one that sees us in the valley. Tauren Wells wrote a song called “Hills and Valleys” in 2017 that speaks to these very highs and lows in life. The song reads this way:
No matter what I have, Your grace is enough.
No matter where I am, I'm standing in Your love. On the mountains, I will bow my life. To the One who set me there. In the valley, I will lift my eyes to the One who sees me there. When I'm standing on the mountain, I didn't get there on my own. When I'm walking through the valley I know I am not alone. You're God of the hills and valleys. Hills and valleys. God of the hills and valleys. And I am not alone (Hills and Valleys).
When we sit on the top of the world, it is important to remember who got us there… And when we are deep in the valleys… It is just as important to remember who is there with us to assure us it will be ok. When David was at his lowest point… Sitting in the deepest valley… He wrote Psalm 23 where he says:
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Psalm 23).
Even when David was in the darkest place, he had no fear because God was with him… Though he was surrounded by his enemies… God was there so that he would lack nothing and to give guidance toward the right path. David found his comfort in Yahweh who’s goodness and love would always be with David…
Be comforted today… David’s God is our God… The author of Hebrews says that he is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He will lead you to the still waters today… Even if you find yourself in the deepest valley...
