Embracing Change
In the journey of faith, we can often be confronted with the powerful force of change. We have seen it before… Many times it’s uncomfortable. We encounter new challenges, face different circumstances, and witness transformations within our own lives and the world around us. How we respond to change can define our journey as followers of Christ. It's easy to become trapped in the familiar phrase, "This is the way it has always been." However, Jesus calls us to a different path. To a different way of traveling this road of life.
Change is not only inevitable but is also a vital part of our spiritual growth. When we look back and reflect on the life of Jesus, we see a message of change and transformation. He was the embodiment of the way, the truth, and the life. His teachings challenged the status quo, and His life demonstrated that transformation is essential for a life of faith. The reality is that the Gospels are filled with instances of Jesus challenging the religious norms of His time. He healed on the Sabbath, dined with tax collectors and sinners, and embraced the outcasts. Jesus was unafraid to challenge the prevailing attitudes and traditions. In Matthew 9:17, Matthew records Jesus as saying:
Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out, and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
These words remind us that in order to fully embrace what Jesus is teaching, we must become open to change. We can’t pour the new wine of His message that is alive in the context of our lives today into old ways of thinking and living, even if they were progressive before. We must be willing to let go of our preconceived notions and traditions that may hinder our spiritual growth.
Charles Spurgeon once said, Change is the handmaiden Nature requires to do her miracles with. The life of an individual is a succession of changes, and one must never fear to cut a new path. Following the way of Jesus is an ever-evolving journey, one that requires us to let go of our fear of change and embrace the transformative power of His teachings.
Change can be uncomfortable and challenging, but it also offers us opportunities for growth and a deeper connection with God. It's a chance to leave behind the old wineskins and open ourselves to new possibilities. When we let go of the phrase, "This is the way it has always been," we create space for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and renew our faith.
When we face times of change, let’s turn to Jesus… He is the way, the truth, and the life. He calls us to walk with Him, to be open to change, and to follow His teachings with a spirit of humility and courage. When we do, we find that the path He leads us on is one of transformation, growth, and a deeper understanding of God's love.
