Sandcastles in the Sand
Do you remember going to the beach as a kid? The hype to get there and see the ocean. To get your feet in the sand and pull out all of your tools to build the best and greatest castle of all time. You get close to the water so you can even add a moat. And if you were really fancy, you brought with you the makings of a great drawbridge to cross that moat and enter your fortress of sand. Do you remember the excitement of constructing that castle? Finishing your great endeavor, stepping back and admiring your work. In all of your work, you only forgot one piece of the puzzle. The tide came in while you were working. And as the waves crashed against the walls of your mighty structure, you watched in amazement and horror as your castle began to erode from the water coming in. Your castle just wasn’t strong enough to withstand the waves.
Isn’t that how life feels sometimes. We spend all of this time building our lives. We make these castles and fortresses to protect ourselves. But is it strong enough against the waves? Have we built it on the right foundation? Jesus put it this way saying everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash (Matthew 7:26-27 NIV). We can know all of the Scripture. We can understand the greatest truths of the Bible. We can know what it takes to have a regular routine in faith. But if we never put it into practice, one day it will all wash away as the tide comes in on our lives.
The Christian faith is more than just knowledge and hearing of the word. It’s meant to be put into practice. Moved forward by our belief that Jesus is Lord and that He’s saved us for a purpose. Jesus said a little earlier that everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock (Matthew 7:24-25 NIV). Putting the lessons learned from Jesus is like building your castle on a foundation that won’t wash away when the tide rolls in. It’s a foundation on the person and salvation of Jesus Christ where the practical steps we take each week in faith will build something that can withstand. Maybe you won’t have a drawbridge and a moat, but the castle you build on Jesus Christ will still be standing when the tide ebbs.
