The Fine Print

Have you ever signed up for a free trial online? Maybe it was a streaming service so you could just watch that one movie or a subscription that promised you an easy free gift that you couldn’t resist. You click the button, enter your information, and check the box that says you agree to the terms and conditions. Most, if not all of us, don't read those terms or conditions. We just want to get to the good part. We click “I agree” and move on. Sometimes, though, we discover that our free trial came with a cost we didn’t know was there. What seemed like a simple decision turns out to involve a commitment we didn't anticipate.

That’s how we sometimes approach our faith. We want the peace, hope, and joy that come from knowing Jesus. We gladly say yes to His invitation. But we may not always stop to consider what that yes means for the way we live. But if we’re to truly follow the path of Jesus, we’ve got to read the fine print. Paul urges the Roman church in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship (Romans 12:1 NIV). Notice where Paul begins: “In view of God's mercy.” Our commitment to Jesus doesn't begin with trying to earn His love. It begins with recognizing the mercy He has already shown us. Because Christ has given Himself for us, we respond by giving ourselves to Him. And Paul describes that response as a living sacrifice. Unlike a one-time decision or a simple yes to an invitation, a living sacrifice is an ongoing process to become transformed. It means bringing our everyday lives before God, not just the comfortable parts. That means our schedules, our conversations, our finances, our ambitions, and even our attitudes.

It’s the kind of commitment that reaches beyond Sunday morning. It changes how we treat people when we're frustrated. It shapes what we do when nobody’s watching. It challenges us when our desires conflict with the word of God. And sometimes, it asks us to give up something we’d rather keep. It’s not always easy,  but following Jesus was never meant to be something we fit into our lives whenever it happens to be convenient. He calls us to give Him our lives completely. The good news is that we don't make this commitment alone. The same God who shows us mercy also works in us by His Spirit, helping us grow and become more like Christ. We won't live it perfectly every day, but we can keep taking the next faithful step.

But there’s a question that needs answering first: have I given Jesus permission to shape every part of my life, or have I only agreed to the parts that are comfortable for me? Have I signed off on the terms and conditions without reading the fine print first. You don't have to answer that with a sense of shame or guilt. Answer it honestly for yourself today. Read the fine print discipleship throughout Scripture and know what you’re saying yes to. Then ask God to show you one area where you need to move from simply believing in Jesus to faithfully following Him. Maybe it's your time, your words, your spending, or a habit you've been reluctant to surrender. Whatever it is, take one practical step today that puts that part of your life under His leadership.
