Tale As Old As Time

What do you see when you look around? Is it a happy sight? Or is there more tension than there was last year? It seems that conflict is inevitable. We’ve watched it rise and fall throughout the history books. It’s a tale as old as time. And the truth is, it can be discouraging. To constantly wake up and see pain and struggle. To press on when we can’t keep our emotions in check. To be scared of tomorrow. Or to be in such a state of worry that we find it hard to go outside. What do we do when the world is a mess?

Often we look to books for the answer. We seek out others to give us advice. We change our diet. We exercise more often. Ultimately, we spend an exorbitant amount of time on these exterior resources that are supposed to fix it all. But what if there was a better way? That’s not to say we shouldn’t care for our mental health and physical wellbeing. We should take care of ourselves, but what if we started somewhere else first? To change our perspective about the order of things. Instead of looking around, what if we started by looking up? The author of Genesis wrote in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1 NIV). All things began when God created them. Sounds so far out of our reach doesn’t it? Why would we matter to the God of the universe? Listen to what the psalmist says: You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely (Psalm 139:1-4).

The God of the universe. The Creator of all things. The beginning and end sees you. What you’re going through. He knows your thoughts, your fears, your apprehensions. The psalmist goes on to say that You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me (Psalm 139:5 NIV). The road ahead may be uncertain for us. It may be a little rocky. Our problems, struggles, and anxieties will probably still be here tomorrow, but the hand of God is on those who love Him. He’s got you covered from the struggles in front of you as well as behind. If struggle has been a tale as old as time, the Living God comes before time. He created all things and is in all things. And in the vastness of all of creation, He sees you, knows you, and protects you.
