Make the Turn

Have you ever tried to fly a kite on a nice, windy day? When we watch kids try for the first time, it’s hard for them to grasp the concept that the wind needs to be pushing you from behind. They want to walk into the wind and see what happens. But it’s not until they make the turn, that the kite will soar.

Often, that’s how we live our lives. Some days, and even some weeks feel like we are walking against the wind. The forces of this world are pushing against us with everything they have. And it feels like you’re running out of energy. If that were the scenario when we were out on a walk, run, or bike what would we do? We’d make the turn to get out of the wind or to put the wind at our back to give us a little push. When we work against the wind for too long, we will burn ourselves out. Scripture calls it a veil that is over us that keeps us from seeing the path ahead. But the apostle Paul says that there is a different way. He says in his second letter to the Corinthian church that whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image (2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NLT).

Working on our own strength is hard. It can make us feel weighed down. But when we make the turn towards the Lord, there is freedom. Not to go out and continue to do whatever we want when we want. But a freedom of our spirit being connected to the Spirit of God. It’s in that freedom that He will change us day by day to become more like Him. However, turning toward the Lord isn’t a one time thing. It’s not a thing we do after we’ve exhausted ourselves or have tried everything on our own first. Turning toward the Lord is a daily occurrence. It’s something that we choose to do every day. And the more we make the turn toward Him, the more He will continue to change us from the inside out.

Maybe that’s where you are today. Trying so hard to make it on your own. Trying to reach all of your goals based on your own strength and the forces of this world and just making you more and more tired. Maybe it’s time to make the turn toward the Spirit of the Lord. Jesus said to come to Him and He will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30). Make the turn to Him today and let Him give you the rest you need and begin to change inside of you. Sometimes all you need is a little change of direction. Put the wind at your back and let Him give you a push.
