Can I Have Your Attention Please?

Have you ever picked up your phone to check one quick thing, only to look up twenty minutes later wondering where the time went? Maybe you opened it to check the weather, respond to a message, or look at one notification. But before long, you've scrolled through the news, watched a few videos, checked social media, and somehow ended up looking at something you never intended to see in the first place. The interesting thing is that none of it necessarily felt like a big decision. One click led to another, one notification caught your attention, and before you knew it, something that was supposed to take a moment had taken a piece of your day.

Our attention is valuable. In fact, there are entire industries built around capturing it. Advertisements, social media feeds, news alerts, and entertainment platforms are constantly competing for our eyes and ears. They want us to look, listen, click, and come back for more. And while there's nothing inherently wrong with using technology, we need to ask ourselves an important question: What is getting our attention, and what is that attention doing to our hearts?

The author of Proverbs gives us this instruction: Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). This author understood that the direction of our lives is connected to what takes root within us. Our thoughts influence our choices, our choices become habits, and our habits begin to shape the people we become. That's why guarding our hearts matters. It's not simply about avoiding the things that are wrong; it's about being intentional with the things we allow to influence us. Jesus teaches us that what we treasure will shape our lives. We may say that God is first, but our everyday choices often reveal what’s receiving our greatest attention. What occupies our thoughts? What consumes our time? What are we constantly working toward? What do we worry about losing? These questions aren't meant to make us feel guilty about every minute we spend on a hobby, at work, or enjoying time with family. Those can all be good gifts from God. Rather, these questions help us recognize when something good has begun to take the place of what is greatest.

The challenge for us today isn’t to spend less time on our phones or rearrange our schedules. It's to make room for what matters most. We can begin our mornings by turning to God's Word before turning to the world's headlines. We can pause to pray before reacting to the latest frustration. We can give someone our undivided attention instead of dividing it between a conversation and a screen. We can intentionally invest our time in worship, fellowship, service, and sharing the love of Christ with others.

What has been capturing your attention lately? What has been receiving your time, energy, and affection? Take a moment today and throughout the week to ask God to help you recognize anything competing for first place in your heart. Then make one intentional choice to turn your attention back to Him. Because what captures our attention can shape our hearts, but when we treasure Christ above all else, He begins to shape our lives.
