Suit Up

For football fans, it’s the best time of the year. The professional season kicked off this past Thursday with, in my humble opinion, a less-than-spectacular start. Players were spitting on each other, grabbing at pads and facemasks, chasing after the W—no matter how they got it.

What if we brought that same passion into our spiritual lives? How much more effective could we be in reaching the lost and standing firm against the schemes of the evil one? Imagine putting on our spiritual uniforms, making sure every piece of protection was in place, and taking the field with reckless abandon.

In Ephesians 6, Paul calls us to do exactly that: Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes (Ephesians 6:10-12 NIV). Too often, we reduce that to a children’s picture of a knight in armor. But Paul’s words carry far more weight. It’s about stripping away the false protections we cling to—our comfort, our control, our safety nets—and instead pleading with God to clothe us with the armor only He provides.

Scripture reminds us this preparation is essential. Before Moses ever stood before Pharaoh, he first stood barefoot before God. In Exodus 3, God captured Moses’ attention through a burning bush that did not burn up. Before speaking, God gave a command: Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground (Exodus 3:5). Moses’ obedience in that quiet wilderness moment prepared him for the battles ahead. Had he not sought God’s presence then, he may not have had the courage to stand when the real fight began.

The lesson is clear: whether you’re an athlete suiting up for the game or a shepherd called to face a king, preparation comes before victory. And for us, that preparation means putting on the armor of God.

The enemy is real. The battles are real. But so is God’s power. Victory is not found in our strength or strategies, but in His protection, His presence, and His promises.

So let’s suit up—not with pads and helmets, but with the full armor of God—ready to stand firm, ready to walk in victory, and ready to bring glory to the One who fights for us.
