We confess belief in the triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. This confession embraces the biblical witness to God’s activity in creation, encompasses God’s gracious self-involvement in the dramas of history, and anticipates the consummation of God’s reign. He is the Creator and ruler of the universe.
ABOUT JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is the Son of God who is co-equal with the Father. We hold in common with all Christians in faith in the mystery of salvation in and through Jesus Christ alone. At the heart of the gospel salvation is God’s incarnation in Jesus of the Nazareth. Scripture witnesses to the redeeming love of God in Jesus’ life and teachings, his atoning death, his resurrection, his sovereign presence in history, his triumph over the powers of evil and death, and his promised return. Because God truly loves us in spite of our willful sin, God judges us, summons us to repentance, pardons us, receives us by that grace to us in Jesus Christ, and gives us hope of life eternal.
ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. We share the Christian belief that God’s redemptive love is realized in human life by the activity of the Holy Spirit, both in personal experience and in the community of believers. This community is the church, which the Spirit has brought into existence for the healing of the nations. “Life in the Spirit” involves diligent use of the means of grace such as praying, fasting, reading the Scripture, attending upon the sacraments, and inward searching in solitude. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right.
ABOUT THE BIBLE
The Bible is God’s Word to us which is the primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine. Through Scripture the living Christ meets us in the experience of redeeming grace. We are convinced that Jesus Christ is the living Word of God in our midst whom we trust in life and death. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our standards affirm the Bible as the source of all that is “necessary” and “sufficient” unto salvation and “is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the rule and guide for faith and practice.
ABOUT HUMAN BEING
People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin”. This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life. We stand in need of redemption through Christ.
Salvation is God’s free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.
People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
